Eminent domain

The legal right of a government or municipal quasi-public body to acquire private property for the purpose of putting it to public use. This right is exercised through a legal process known as condemnation, in which the court decides whether or not the proposed use constitutes a public use and also decides the price or other form of compensation that will be paid to the property's owner.
