Tenant

A person who has or occupies lands or tenements by any form of right of title might be called a landholder.

A tenant refers to a person who is physically occupying and residing in a rental property, as opposed to someone who may only be named on the lease but doesn't live there. This distinction is important in real estate and property management.

For example, if Bill signs a lease but then allows his friend Steve to live in the apartment instead without going through proper channels, Bill would be the legal tenant (on paper), but Steve would be the actual tenant (physical occupant). This situation can create various legal and practical complications, as property managers and landlords need to know who is actually living in their properties for security, liability, and compliance reasons.

It's important to note that being an actual tenant without being on the lease (like Steve in our example) can be problematic and often violates standard lease terms. It is advisable that all actual tenants should be properly documented on the lease to protect both the tenants' and landlord's rights.
